The weather sure has been nice for the past few days. I’ve even seen a winter’s hat on a couple of our interns as we start the day. What a crazy year weather wise. We had such an early spring, starting in February, June and July were swelteringly hot, and now mid-August has turned as cool as late September. It sure is hard to plan for such changes, but we’re sure enjoying the cool days.
This time of year is another transition time. Many of the summer crops are coming to an end as the early fall crops are just starting to produce. It looks like we’re going to start having turnips, maybe even by this weekend. Arugula has already appeared in your boxes. Radishes are on the way, as are the fall greens. Kales and Collards won’t be too long now. There are a few rounds of broccoli and broccoli raab planted. Kohlrabi, bok choi, and napa cabbage are also out there.
As I was writing our harvest list on Monday night I was a little hard pressed to come up with enough variety for the CSA boxes. Sometimes we know what’s ready to harvest and how much there is well before we head down to pick. Other times, like this week, we have to have a little faith that there will be something ready that we had just overlooked, or even forgot was out there. That was the way of it this week. I was glad to realize that the next round of carrots was ready and that there was lots of thyme for everyone to get a bunch.
Our past intern, Megan McGowan, came over to the farm Tuesday evening. It was great to hear about her trials of growing her first big garden on her own. She was lamenting that her garden was full of weeds. Well, it’s August and it’s been a wet summer, so there isn’t an organic farm around that isn’t a little out of control with weeds. That is the way of it.
