News from the Farm – July 6, 2012

Garlic drying in the barn

Somehow it got to be July! Of course there’s a lot going on here on the farm. The big project we’ve been working on is harvesting the garlic. It looks good. The best bed of garlic is actually still in the ground, hopefully to be pulled on Thursday. But this year’s harvest looks to be the best yet here at Full Sun. For years and years we’ve trailed new varieties, growing 4-6 different garlics every year. It’s kinda fun to do that, but because of some diseases that are endemic in our soils, not all of those garlics would do well. This year, or I should say, last fall when we planted the garlic, we went with the one variety that really worked for us and our soil, and we planted more than we usually do. SO, we have quite a bit of garlic! It is now up in the barn loft, laid out all nicely with fans blowing over it, in order for it to dry as fast as possible. Soon it will be in your boxes.

Rain, Rain, Rain. Over 6 inches this week. Not good. No disasters as yet, but Vanessa & I are out of town and haven’t seen the situation. We’ll be back on Sunday, to a hopefully well drained farm. Our interns have been running the show since Wednesday, under some challenging conditions.
