News from the Farm – August 24, 2013

Boy do I wish there was more to write about other than the rain! It just hasn’t stopped. I hope all of you saw the article in the Asheville Citizen-Times a couple of days ago. If you missed it, the highlight is that we’re now over 24 inches above average! If we didn’t get any more rain after the end of July we would still have had the 7th wettest year on record. As it happens, it hasn’t stopped raining and we’re very close to the all time record already, here in the middle of August. So where does that leave us? In a difficult position at the very least. I’ll try to mix the bad news in with the good news. So the summer squash and cucumbers are about done, there are a few remaining live plants, but not for long, at least where the field cucumbers are concerned. There are a few hundred cukes in the greenhouses that are looking ok, growing well, though they have powdery mildew that we’re trying to control. (Good News!) We harvested all the winter squash which is up in the barn curing. Hopefully in another week they will sweeten up a bit and we’ll get them to you. However, some of them, a good many, unfortunately, are rotting. We’ll go through all the many crates every week, culling the ones that aren’t going to make it and keeping the ones who still look good. The fall crops are looking good. All the greens are growing well, though they are still pretty small, but in three weeks they’ll hopefully be big enough to harvest. We’re already looking towards next season, trying to figure out where to plant the over-wintering crops: strawberries, onions & garlic mostly. Again with all the rain and soggy ground we’re starting to get worried that all these crops won’t have a place to go when the time comes. Anyway, there’s honey in your boxes this week! And a pretty good tasting watermelon. Enjoy.
