News from the Farm – August 31, 2013

We’re moving into fall…the light has started to change, it’s cooler at night now. It’s a bit early for this to be happening, but nothing about this year has been normal, so we’re just going with it. This is usually a time of real abundance on the farm with all the summer crops still producing as well as the early fall crops starting. Well, not this year, we can hardly wait for the fall crops to really get going so we can try to forget about the summer. So far all is looking good in that department. The greens are growing rapidly, possibly harvestable by next week. There’s radishes and turnips coming along. There’s still more planting to do for the fall in the next week or so. We’re really getting into the decisions we have to make for next season: how many beds of onions, which varieties; what flowers do we want to grow; how many beds of garlic; that sort of thing. It hasn’t rained for a week, so we’re making sure all the new crops have all the proper equipment around them to water them. We’re mowing down old beds, pulling up irrigation lines that were never used, discing in all the weeds, and preparing to sow the winter cover crops. Below is a picture of the summer cover crop in one of our fields. We used soybeans, millet, sunflowers, cowpeas, and oats. It makes a nice picture, but it’s all gone now; mowed down and disced in, feeding the soil.
