News from the Farm – May 6, 2014

We wanted to keep you all abreast of the comings and goings on the farm.

First, we will be at the Montford Market this Wednesday and all the next Wednesdays until November.

Second, we will start the regular CSA season next week, May 14 for Wednesday folks and May 19 for Saturday pick ups. The strawberries are really starting to turn and with this hot weather we’re hoping to be covered up in strawberries by then.

We have been busy for the past couple of weeks!  All the winter cover crops have now been mown and disced in, feeding the soil microbes and helping to create a heathy & fertile medium for us to plant all your vegetables, peppers, eggplant, field tomatoes, basil, sweet corn, beans, and much more. Right now those plants are in the greenhouse getting ready to be put into the ground in the next two weeks.  We’ve already planted or sown two rounds of cucumbers, summer squash, sugar snap peas, beets, carrots, onions, lettuce, bok choi, kohlrabi, potatoes, broccoli, cabbage, and a huge host of flowers.

The new high tunnel is up and full of tomato plants already. We’ll have about 500 plants in the tunnels and another 400 or so planted outside. We’re going for a huge tomato year!

On the personnel front, this season has gotten off to a little bit of a shaky start in that, I, Alex have just under gone shoulder surgery. So I’m typing to you here with one hand, a challenge…The surgery went well and I am on the mend after a few months of struggling with an injury that needed a surgical fix. So many apologies for the lack of communication over the past couple of weeks. Our ship has righted and we’ll be on our way. We’ve had great help from our worker members (please keep it up!) and our interns this year have really stepped up to the challenge. We have them doing a large portion of the tractor work which had freed Vanessa up to run around and keep other aspects of the farm moving forward.

Hope to see everyone at market!

your farmers,
Alex & Vanessa
