News from the Farm – June 28, 2014

Next Wednesday we start at our new market location at All Souls Pizza!

We’re really putting spring behind us now that it is officially summer. If you arrive at market early on Wednesday you’ll notice the first tomatoes for sale! We have some mixed pints of cherry tomatoes for sale this week. As the harvest grows we hope to provide you will an abundance of tomatoes this season. It looks like the first heirloom tomatoes will ripen for the Saturday market. There’s a little bit of eggplant as well.

We’re keeping a close eye on that garlic. It looks like we’re going to plan on harvesting it on Monday of next week. Many hands make light work, if any worker members, or any CSA members, want to join us for that big harvest. I think we’re going to take Thursday as a big clean-up day around the farm: cleaning up around the greenhouse, putting away row cover & weight bags, and mowing old beds down. We have a large number of flowers to plant Wednesday morning. We had a great work day on Thursday with some extra help from some former CSA worker members and a former intern. Thanks. All sorts of different projects we accomplished. Row cover was pulled up and put away in the barn, trellised the dahlias, thinned the winter squash, replanted some sweet potatoes, covered the second melon bed, mowed down all of the early spring field, except for the garlic.

The boxes we use for the CSA shares are waxed and are not recyclable, but we do reuse them. So PLEASE remember to BRING THEM BACK next week.

Ideas for Cooking

Basil. Enjoy the fresh basil with some fresh tomatoes or in a cold pasta salad. I find that it’s best, at least for me, to go ahead and make some pesto to freeze early in the season. That way the basil is at its best and I don’t get caught not having made any when all of a sudden something happens to the basil and it’s gone until next summer. So, to toot my our horn, we already have a good supply of pesto waiting to bring a little summer goodness to a cold winters day.

Leeks are wonderful sauteed along with other veggies. You could make a nice Leek and potato soup to eat now or save for later.
