News from the Farm – September 24, 2015

We survived the farm tour this past weekend. We have a little over 100 visitors to the farm over the two days. It was nice to talk with people about what we do here and many said that our farm was “the most beautiful of any they have seen”. That always feels nice to hear. Whether that is a function of where we are physically in our valley or how tidy, organized, and productive our farm is, we’re not sure. We’ll take the compliment either way.

This week’s projects were to plant the strawberries (Thursday), harvest the popcorn, and dig the last few beds of potatoes. We got it all done! The popcorn looks really nice, nice large cobs. The ears are harvested and shucked, then placed in mesh bags and hung in our greenhouse to dry. It takes what seems like forever to dry properly. Once ready to pop the kernels are good for years. We’re hoping that it will be ready by your last CSA box.

Only three more weeks of the regular season CSA! As in past years, we will be offering a 5 week Fall/Winter Extension starting October 25 and going until November 22. Pick up will be on Saturday mornings at North Asheville Tailgate Market. More details to follow! We hope you’ll join us.

Also, please note that all vacation credits must be redeemed before the regular CSA season ends. If you have a credit, please use it.

***Cases or half cases of Butternut squash are available at any time (prior notice needed to fill your order). We are offering full cases (40#) for $50 and half cases (20#) for $25. Let us know if you’d like to stock up for the winter! We have lots.

The boxes we use for the CSA shares are waxed and are not recyclable, but we do reuse them. So PLEASE remember to BRING THEM BACK next week.

Ideas for Cooking
The Jester winter squash is the more oval of the two kinds of squash in your box today. This variety is a new one for us this year, and was a taste test winner at lunch the other day.
