Everyone is off to Double Tree Farm in Madison county to press & boil the sorghum. By the end of the day we’ll have molasses! Cathy Guthrie is an old friend of Vanessa’s and has a draft horse powered farm in the Grapevine area of Madison Co. The crew (&horses) will press/grind out all the juice from the sorghum canes. Hopefully we’ll get between 90-120 gallons of juice which will get transferred to a huge pan, about 3′ by 6′. They’ll build a fire under it and start the juice to boil. As the juice boils all the chlorophyll and other “impurities” will be filtered out. And then just at the right moment when the juice is just thick enough, the fire gets put out and the molasses gets transferred to a stainless steel bottling container, then, once cooled, into jars and to market. It will take them ALL day.
The other huge news from the farm is that we had a killing freeze over the weekend, the earliest that we can remember. So no more flowers. We did have some in our cooler and managed to find a few things that weren’t killed, but for the most part the flowers have come to an abrupt halt. All the vegetables made it through pretty well, though some got a little tip burn. But on the positive side LOTS of tender weeds were killed as well!
There are still spots available for the CSA extension. Let us know if you’d like to sign up! There’s still LOTS of produce to come out of the fields.
***Cases or half cases of Butternut squash are available at any time (prior notice needed to fill your order). We are offering full cases (40#) for $50 and half cases (20#) for $25. Let us know if you’d like to stock up for the winter! We have lots.
The boxes we use for the CSA shares are waxed and are not recyclable, but we do reuse them. So PLEASE remember to BRING THEM BACK next week.
Tomato horned worm with parasitic wasp eggs attached! yah!
Still lots of vegetables to harvest!
