News from the Farm – May 18, 2011

This week we were planning on planting all the Summer crops. Mother Nature had other plans for us. We are having to wait out the cooler weather to plant the peppers. eggplant, tomatoes & basil. Those crops don’t appreciate temperatures under 50, but everything is ready for them to go in the ground either on Thursday or Monday of next week. On the Monday farm walk Vanessa & the crew realized that there’s A Lot of work to do out in the fields. Not only is there a greenhouse full of starts to be planted, there’s starting to be lots of little weeds coming up all over the farm, and the onions were telling us they were ready to harvest. So we spent most of the day Monday harvesting the over-wintering onions. It was a pretty good haul. (See photo). Tuesday we had quite a crew of worker members out to help with harvest. We managed to get everything in, washed, and boxed before lunch, as well as all the onions spread out in the loft of the barn. Mark Rosenstein was out as well to help out, and cooked us all an amazing lunch, complete with strawberry shortcake! The rain kept us away from strawberry picking, to be done Wednesday morning rain or shine. So we spent the afternoon in the greenhouses doing sowings and suckering and tying up tomatoes. We’ve had a good start to the week, now we just need to get those heat loving crops in the ground!

We’re feeling like this week’s box is a little light. Unfortunately that’s what we have this week. With the rain yesterday, we hope that some of the other crops that are almost ready will push on through and be ready to grace your boxes next week. Kohlrabi and Sugar Snap Peas are on the horizon.

Fenwick and Dana will be moving on sometime in July, with Fenwick attending a U.of Georgia graduate program. So we’ve been interviewing replacements over the past few days. We’ve had many, many applications sent in, and we’ve already had two prospectives out to the farm with another coming on Wednesday morning. The hard part will be choosing ONE, out of the many interesting people wanting to work with us.

Many of you have asked about the date of the Market moving. We have June 22nd down as the hopeful opening day,we’ve run into to some unforeseen zoning issues, but it looks like those will be overcome by the 22nd of June! We’re really excited about the move and hope that it will provide all our customers with easy access to the market and easy parking.

Ideas for Cooking
We had some broccoli raab in a stir fry for lunch today, delicious! Chop it up into whatever seized pieces you’re in the mood for and add it along with all the other veggies you typically enjoy in your stir fry. You can add the garlic scapes as well. Chop them up into 1/2 inch pieces and sautee them up. They add a nice mellow garlic flavor to any dish. We often put the scapes on home made pizzas as well.
