News from the Farm – August 13, 2011

We’re back! Thanks to our crew we had a relaxing week at the beach. They did a great job while we were gone. We had a great time, but we’re glad to be back in the mountains!

So two weeks ago, right before we left for the beach, we had a major push to plant all the Fall greens, the last round of swiss chard, the first fall broccoli, and a few other things. We got all that in, the interns planted more bok choi & kohlrabi, while we were away. There’s more lettuce to go out, along with more broccoli. We’ve sown the last round of carrots and beets on Monday, along with some white globe turnips and 5 different radishes. The getting down to the last of the last. Pretty soon everything will be in the ground, except for the very last things, that go in in September & October (strawberry plants, onions & garlic).

As we look ahead, we’re trying to keep the weeds down, poll up drip tape from beds that are no longer productive, and mow those areas down, getting them ready for the Fall cover crops to be sown in the next few weeks. There’s a lot of weeds to beat back, more potatoes to dig up, and still plenty of harvesting to do!
