News from the Farm – 2015 Week 1 Extension

Some very late season lettuces in the high tunnel.

Some very late season lettuces in the high tunnel.

Hello everyone. We’re so glad to have you with us. The seasons are really changing and the next month or so of boxes will reflect that, more greens!, potatoes, winter squash, popcorn(once it’s ready), and root vegetables. The extension boxes are most probably going to be a little bigger than the regular season boxes, so get ready to store the potatoes & winter squash, and root veg. for the long winter. The days are getting much shorter and we just delayed our start time on the farm from 7 to 7:30am on harvest days, and to 8am on non-harvest days! It feels so indulgent and nice! It mostly a practical change; it’s hard to harvest vegetables in the dark. We have our full crew until the end of October and then Amy & Drea will be heading out to new adventures. Julia will be staying with us for another season and will help us through the last markets right up to the week before Christmas, or so.

We;re back to complaining about the weather. It’s still too wet to work the soil, do a lot of weeding, planting, or sowing. There are still some little projects we can work on until the ground dries up a bit, then back to planting the garlic and over-wintering onions. We may move up our sorghum making to this week, since we can’t do much around our farm. We’ll see if we can get the ok from Double Tree Farm in Madison Co. about a Thursday pressing. All the sorghum cane is cut and clean in the back our our farm truck ready to go.

The boxes we use for the CSA shares are waxed and are not recyclable, but we do reuse them. So PLEASE remember to BRING THEM BACK next week.
