We’re back from a really great trip to Utah to help celebrate my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. We spent 5 days on the Green river floating through Desolation Canyon. What a trip! But we are back to farming reality and it’s August out there, which means it’s a jungle out there. The weeds have really taken off, and the grass around the fields, and the vegetables too. We hope you enjoyed that first round of sweet corn in last weeks’ box. The next round is here already. There’s one more round after this one. All the fall greens are in the ground and starting to grow. We’re sowing some of the last rounds of carrots & beets. We’re back to sowing radish, arugula, and Japanese turnips. There’s bok choi, kohlrabi, and napa cabbage going out today. It’s a real hub bub of activity around the farm today and will be again tomorrow. The peppers are starting to turn red, so look for them in next week’s box as well. There are still a couple of beds of potatoes still in the ground, and if ever stops raining out here, we’ll dig them up. The winter squash looks to be producing very well. The vines have started to die back, as they do this time of year, revealing lots of butternuts, acorns, kobucha, sweet dumpling, honey nut, and even some delicata squashes. We’ll being to harvest them in a week or two, then allowing most of them to cure for a few weeks (allowing the starches to turn to sugars) and start getting them in your boxes sometime in September.
Please return your CSA box next week. These boxes are waxed and are not recyclable, but we reuse them. So PLEASE remember to bring them back next week.
