Tomato mania!

Tomato mania!

The first week all season with no lettuce! It was a long run, an amazing run, but the streak had to come to an end. Sorry folks no lettuce this week, but we should be back in business next week. We’ve sown the last of the beets and carrots. We’ll sow some more radish and arugula and have some more lettuce & lettuce mix to plant. We’re still in a daily battle with the weeds, but for the most part are at least in a stale mate with them. We’ve started to harvest the winter squash. The Delicata, most of the Acorn, and some of the Jester are up and in the barn. In all we harvested about 40 cases of winter squash, and maybe got about a third of it. Looks to be a great year for winter squash!

growing tomatoesThis week’s corn in the second to last; there’s one more sowing out there. It’s tasseling and looking good, but will be a few weeks away from your boxes. The summer cover crop was mowed down over the weekend. It was a bit of a chore. Because there was so much plant material (12’ tall in some places) to mow, I had to put the tractor in a very slow gear. It took about two and a half hours to mow 3/4 of an acre! So far we’re feeling like this season has been one of rea
l abundance. Looking back at past year’s records at times the cukes and squash had almost all died by now, the melons rooted, the sweet corn eaten by raccoons. We’ve been lucky with the weather, little rain and warmer nights has kept the molds and fungus growth way down. A little bit of electric fencing has kept the animals out of the corn and peppers. Anyway we hope that we’re passing along some of that abundance to you all. Enjoy this week’s box.

Please return your CSA box next week. These boxes are waxed and are not recyclable, but we reuse them. So PLEASE remember to bring them back next week.

Ideas for Cooking

(We want to thank long time CSA member John Loyd for providing ideas and inspiration in this section!!!

“Did you ever stop to taste a carrot? Not just eat it, but taste it? You can’t taste the beauty and energy of the earth in a Twinkie.” Terri Guillemets

You can add 2 or 3 springs of summer savory (or 1 tsp. dried) and the same amount of rosemary to green beans as you cook them for extra taste.

CORN
There is a lot of corn in at this time. Our favorites are just to boil and butter it or grill it with shuck on or off. A friend slathers peanut butter on corn and then grills it.
