News from the Farm – August 26, 2011

Hurray for Greens! The Fall greens are starting to come on. It’s still August, still Summer, but it certainly felt like Fall this morning. It was just about cold, especially on our hands as we harvested wet greens and lettuce this Tuesday morning. The harvest list has started to change, more leafy greens and less tomatoes and peppers. The last few rain storms we’ve had over the weekend really put a hurtin’ on the field tomatoes. We went from being overrun with tomatoes to harvesting only a fraction of what was ready last week. All good things come to an end. There are still some tomatoes coming out of the hoop houses, but it looks like tomatoes will be making a fairly quick exit. We spent Monday doing some hand weeding and generally cleaning up, the wet ground had altered our plans somewhat. In the afternoon the crew got all the winter squash out of the field and into one of the barns. We harvested about 2,700# of squash! We’re going to be working hard on Thursday to get more potatoes out of the ground and some more fields ready for more Fall crops. We’re keeping an eye on Hurricane Irene, which could make things difficult around here if we get multiple inches of rain in a short period of time.

The ‘Christmas’ Melon and a firm, slightly greenish tint to it. It’s very sweet. If kept refrigerated it could last until December, hence the name!

Sorry for the short update…back and forth to the vet has turned my routine into a frantic juggling act…
