News from the Farm – July 20, 2011

We’ve been attacked! We’re fairly sure that there is a group of masked bandits rampaging through our fields at time. They went for the good stuff: the sweet corn! It was pretty disappointing to go out this morning to see the extensive damage and remnants of their feast. In years past we have always seen some damage to the sweet corn, but this is a whole new level. We’ll do dome thinking on how we can discourage the culprits as the next round of corn beings to mature in the coming weeks.

We finally found some time to dig some potatoes! We got 4 out of the 18 beds dug and in the cooler. Based on what those beds yielded we’re looking at about 3,500# of spuds. That’s a lot of potatoes! We need at least 800 pounds for all our CSA members. We give about 500# away to the Leicester Food Pantry & the St. Andrews Society. That leaves the remainder to sell at the tailgate markets and feed the farmers through the winter. Once we get all the potatoes out of the ground we will offer 10, 20 & 30# cases at a discounted price to you all. The more you buy the bigger the discount. We’ll talk about the details in the future.

This time of year the weeds are going, well, like weeds. The farm can take on the look of a jungle at times. On Monday we put the mower on, and took down most of the jungle. Mowing helps calm my farming mind.

All is well out here, just plugging away. The greenhouse is full of lost of little Fall kales, broccolis, cabbages, and the like. Once we get most of the Fall crops planted the work load lessens a bit, as we don’t have much more to plant after this next big push.

This is the half way point in the CSA!
