News from the Farm – July 9, 2011

Hope everyone had a great holiday weekend. Ours was a lot of fun and exhausting at the same time. We joined long-time CSA members Dave & Christine Ray on a picnic/hike/swim at Big Creek in the Smokies. We enjoyed the COLD water and great company. We brought along masks and snorkels. Seeing the rainbow trout and the rocks along the bottom in that crystal clear water was totally amazing.

So back to the farm…our crew has gotten bigger. We’ve added another intern. Sara Howard will be with us for the next couple of months, hopefully getting us through the toughest part of the season. We hope to get some of the weeds under control around the farm, finally get the Spring beds cleaned up and disced in. There are really so many projects that need attention, it’s a bit dizzying. One at a time, one at a time. We just need to keep working. The weather we’ve had over the past month has led to every kind of emotion and problem. We’ve had a long period without any rain at all, to a few with way too much, followed by none. We started to irrigate again late last week, only to have the rains start up again. We can have the best possible plan, but we are ultimately at the not so tender mercies of the weather.

The tomatoes are really starting to come in. There are a variety of heirloom tomatoes in your boxes. Some of the possibilities are: Green Zebra, Aunt Ruby’s Green, German Striped, Eva’s Purple Ball, Brandywine, Moonglow, Black Krim, Taxi, and Cherokee Purple. They should all be ready to eat, but some may get better in a day or two. Hey there’s honey in the boxes as well!
