We’re hitting our stride here on the farm. Our full crew is here. Christine from the Atlanta area has joined us for the summer months and Phillip, our volunteer/intern is coming out every day. With all these hands we’re starting to make some progress. Some how the “To-Do” list remains long, but progress is being made! The winter squash has popped up, as has a few varieties of beans we sowed last week. We’ve planted the popcorn on Monday, more than 1200 plants! The next round of sweet corn, summer squash, cukes, beans and sunflowers went in on Wednesday & Thursday.
The summer cover crop is coming along nicely with the rains we’ve had over the past week.
As we approach the summer solstice the farm is really starting to transition. The field with most of the early spring crops is being readied for a summer cover crop. Most of the beds are now finished, the drip tape will be removed, then the field will be mowed, disced, and sown to the cover crop. We’re spending more time weeding, keeping the summer crops relatively free from competition. Some of the more nasty weeds are starting to show themselves, nut sedge & pricky pigweed are the worst. We’ll be trying to keep ahead of them for the rest of the season.
The “green” garlic is just not cured yet, which means it’s still fairly “wet”. It’s perfectly useable right now and delicious, but it’s not going to last months & months unused, it needs to dry out to increase its longevity. Just put it on your kitchen window sill and let the sun hit it, if you’re not going to use it in the next few weeks.
Perhaps next week we’ll dig some new potatoes. As we get lots of the potatoes out of the ground we’ll start giving you all potatoes one week and garlic & onions the next regularly. This week’s box will have some summer squash in it and we hope to start giving cucumbers as well in the near future. We go to great pains not to overwhelm you with summer squash, but we will pass along some truly great recipes using summer squash (Squashamole!)
Please let us know if you’re planning on coming out to the farm potluck party. It’s always a good time!
