Helicopter landing in our field.

View of Full Sun Farm

Thanks to all those who made it out to the farm on Sunday. We had a great time talking with everyone, showing people around the farm, and enjoying some good food. I’ve left out the big event of the party, one that over-shadows just about everything…the helicopter landing in the hay field, and unloading some friends and party goers. It was very exciting. Steve, the helicopter pilot gave the Full Sun Farm crew short rides around the valley. What a way to see the farm (attached is a picture of the farm as we were coming in for a landing)! Besides the helicopter excitement, Vanessa and I really felt it was a great little party. Thanks again to all those who made it, and to all those who couldn’t, we hope to find another time later on in the season when more of you can come visit. But you are always welcome to come out and lend a hand or two!

What have we accomplished in the past week?…i mowed down all the spring crops that never did much to begin with, so now we can truly walk by that field without the awful reminders there. We’ve been weeding. The hazelnuts and perennial flowers now have irrigation set up on them, and two of the hazelnut rows are mulched. The field tomatoes are trellised and growing well. We dug a bed of potatoes some of which are in your boxes this week. We’ve spent a good bit of time mulching between some of the beds that will be in the ground for a long time (winter squash, tomatoes, melons, sweet potatoes). With a thick hay mulch covering the soil we hope to keep the majority of the weeds from germinating, allowing the crop to grow with less competition. It makes for an easier harvest as well.
