News from the Farm – June 8, 2011

We did the final hilling of the potatoes on Monday, planted the popcorn, another round of sweet corn, a bed of lettuce, and weeded and weeded and weeded. There’s starting to be a real shift in the kinds of produce that is available now. There are a few “Spring” things that will get ready in the next week or so, like broccoli, but the summer squash and cucumbers are starting to really produce. There are even some cherry tomatoes turning from green to yellow, orange, and red! Right now it’s still just a hand full of tomatoes, but by next week there may be enough to take to market. We’ll keep you posted.

This week it seems that EVERYTHING has to be done! There are many, many more plants to get planted, lots of weeds to get under control, produce to harvest, everything needs to get watered, the tomatoes need to be suckered and trellised, the list goes on….Every week we make a big “to do” list, so everyone on the farm has a sense of what needs to be done. We try to tackle the most pressing items on the list early in the week, but sometimes everything seems to be pressing. Some things on the list have been there for weeks now, but some day we will get to it all. One at a time, that’s the only way to do it.

Ahhh…the new part for the irrigation pump finally came. Now we don’t have to run to the pump every 15 minutes and press a button to backwash the filters! That is a huge mental weight that is not longer dragging me down. And it rained out here on Wednesday (just a tiny bit), and on Thursday, a real rain, though it did come with about 5 painfully long minutes of hail. The hail was fairly small and didn’t do that much damage. The broad leafed vegetables did get a little shredded but it was minimal.

The sugar snap peas in your box this week aren’t the prettiest, but they are still tasty. Peas generally like cooler weather and are making an early exit this season because of the heat.

Slow and steady wins the race. We’re making progress on all that needs doing…
