A big thanks to all those that came out on Monday. We had a big crew out here weeding away. They helped us get caught up for the most part, though there are a lot more weeds to deal with out there. In last week’s newsletter we were irrigating like mad, now it a bit soggy out in the fields. We hoping for some sunny days to come. As the summer came to an end, Christine has moved onto to another job, working at a Montessori school in Asheville. She’s still here on the farm for another week or so. She’s already missed. Katie is taking her vacation week this week on a family trip to Montana! It was Dianna’s birthday on Tuesday. Happy Birthday Dianna! Well, I mentioned almost all the interns, so here’s an update on Sanaz…she’s applying for a job in Memphis, TN, to work on a educational garden. We’re all crossing our fingers, hoping she gets the job.
As you’ve seen in your boxes it’s a real time of transition. There are still some summer veggies, but the fall varieties are starting to find their way in the boxes. Despite some struggles with our greens just after planting, what we have looks really great, and tastes wonderful after months and months without greens. Last week you got turnips, next week it might be celeriac or watermelon radishes. We’re still sowing and planting a few more things, trying to keep going as long as we can into the fall and early winter. A couple of exciting harvests are yet to come: sweet potatoes & popcorn. The sweet potatoes can put forked up any time now, while we’ll wait for the popcorn to dry out a bit more on the stalk before picking it and drying it further by hanging it in the greenhouse. Last year we grew 2 beds of popcorn, this year we grew three. Hopefully we’ll have enough to sustain everyone’s popcorn habit this winter!
